There are many skin conditions that your pet can suffer from, whether it be a sensitivity, an allergy, dry skin, dandruff, and hot spots.

Preventive Measures

  • feed your pet a veterinary approved high quality diet
  • when bathing, use dog formulated shampoo to prevent dry skin
  • be sure to rinse all shampoo residue from your pet after bathing
  • dry your pets fur thoroughly after swimming or bathing
  • groom your pet regularly; some problems are caused by matted hair providing breeding grounds for a variety of skin diseases, regular grooming also helps keep you aware of any incipient problems
  • keep your dog flea and parasite free, using monthly topical medications like Revolution
  • check your dog regularly for foxtails, burrs, and other sharp objects it may pick up when outside

Skin problems are not easy to diagnose and cure, but there is a lot of research and on these topics.  If your pet is experiencing skin conditions, keep a pet diary, recording the daily activities, meals and treats that your pet has, as well as any reactions your pet may have.  Facts like this can help your veterinarian narrow down the triggers that are causing the problems.  Once recorded and reviewed, patterns can become much more evident this way and easier to pinpoint those triggers.

Before Your Appointment
It’s always best to be prepared for your veterinary appointment.  To do so, bring along your pets medicine chest, their current diet and any treats (cut out the ingredients label if easier), and do not bathe your pet prior to their appointment, it’s always best that the doctor see the condition and able to take samples if necessary.

Hot Spots
A hot spot is an infection of the skin which can spontaneously appear anywhere on the animal’s body and can readily spread.  It may be caused by allergens, parasites, fleas, wounds, stress or bacteria.  Hot spots can occur in any dog breed but are more common to those with thicker coats.  Symptoms include red inflamed lesions, itching, biting and licking.  Hot spots are typically treated easily with a thorough clean and medications.
